Hanna Piepel is an interdisciplinary artist exploring the intersection of illustration and design with her ceramic practice. Her screen printed surface designs often reflect an eclectic contrast of florals, abstract forms and bold use of color showcasing Hanna’s appreciation for modern pattern design of the 50's, 60's and 70's and roots in graphic design principles. Hanna’s colorful illustration style and hand-drawn patterns are also featured in several published children’s books.

“As an interdisciplinary artist creating functional ceramics, I explore the importance of attention and joy in our everyday living and shared rituals. The ceramic process itself is an exercise in mindfulness and hope. It is my wish that through my work and teaching, I can share this wonderful skill with others.

Most of my ceramic work is thrown on the wheel or slab built. I prefer porcelain, due to its color and responsiveness on the wheel. My colorful illustration style and hand-drawn patterns are applied as surface designs to clay forms using image transfer techniques from photosensitive emulsion screen prints. Each piece is fired two to three times and reflects an obsessive amount of thought spent on design, form and function.” –HP
